Loft & Bear is the craft distillery Paul Ryan Elliott started in a downtown Los Angeles loft, at a time when only one other distillery was operating in the city; in 2022 it opened an 8,600-square-foot distillery in South Los Angeles. The company is Black-owned and Hispanic-owned, and through its Distill. Drink. Donate. program it gives five percent of profits to PATH (People Assisting The Homeless). The brand made its name with a vodka distilled from soft wheat, and the Artisanal White Rum follows the same small-batch approach. The mash is blackstrap molasses from Louisiana, fermented and distilled low and slow, and the rum is single-pass pot distilled in Los Angeles with no re-distilled heads or tails blended back in. It is bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) and earned 95 points at the Bartender Spirits Awards. The brand's tasting notes describe an earthy nose with subtle fruit, a palate of green caramelized plantain with slight viscosity and a crisp mouthfeel, and a long, refined finish with gentle lingering warmth. Mix it in a daiquiri or mojito, or pour it over ice with soda and lime.
