Mainland Rum is an independent American rum bottler founded by Seth Benhaim, the entrepreneur behind Broken Barrel Whiskey, built around rare, discontinued and well-aged single barrels sourced from distilleries across the continental U.S., with no blending, no dilution and no additives in any release. This Florida bottling was distilled in 2017 at Florida Caribbean Distillers in Auburndale from blackstrap molasses made from Florida sugarcane, aged seven years, and given time in sherry casks, which the brand credits for its stewed orchard fruit and sun-ripened berry character. It's bottled at full cask strength, 56.8% ABV (113.6 proof), and the release came to 595 bottles. Retail tasting notes describe fresh citrus with a hint of coconut on the nose, then dark dried fruits, burnt caramel, roasted nuts and a touch of spice from the sherry, along with fig, toasted oak and molasses and a velvety texture that carries the proof well; other reviewers have picked up raspberry, nutmeg, bread and black pepper.
