Mainland 8 Year California Rum
Mainland Rum is an independent American rum bottler founded by Seth Benhaim, the entrepreneur behind Broken Barrel Whiskey, built around rare, discontinued and well-aged single barrels sourced from distilleries across the continental U.S., with no blending, no dilution and no additives in any release. This California bottling was distilled from molasses in 2017, aged eight years in a single 53-gallon ex-bourbon cask, and bottled at full cask strength, 64% ABV (128 proof). Nothing is added after the barrel: no sugar, no coloring and no water to bring the proof down. Mainland describes it as a combination of dark barrel characteristics, vanilla, cherry and sweet brown rice notes, a profile shaped as much by eight years in charred American oak as by the molasses spirit itself. At this strength it rewards patience; pour a small measure, let it sit, and add water a few drops at a time to find where the cherry and vanilla open up. A single-barrel, limited bottling, so once this cask is gone it's gone.
