Mainland Rum is an independent American rum bottler founded by Seth Benhaim, the entrepreneur behind Broken Barrel Whiskey, built around rare, discontinued and well-aged single barrels sourced from distilleries across the continental U.S., with no blending, no dilution and no additives in any release. This Georgia bottling comes from Ghost Coast Distillery in Savannah, a distillery that has since shut its doors, so there is no more of this spirit being made. It was distilled from molasses in 2017, aged seven years in a single 53-gallon ex-bourbon barrel, and bottled at full cask strength, 57.9% ABV (115.8 proof), with no sugar, coloring or dilution. That one barrel produced only 192 bottles. Mainland describes a barrel-driven profile with almond, marzipan and honey, and compares its elegance to a Highland malt, with a molasses core, warming spice and a subtle peppery edge on the finish. It's a rum for whiskey drinkers as much as rum fans, showing how much a good American oak barrel can do with a clean molasses distillate over seven humid Southern summers.
