Montanya Oro Rum
Montanya is Karen Hoskin's mountain rum distillery, based just outside Crested Butte, Colorado, after starting out in Silverton in 2008, and it takes its cue from the high-altitude rum traditions of Guatemala, Colombia and Panama. The recipe is short on purpose: raw, non-GMO, American-grown sugarcane, yeast, nutrients and water, fermented in-house and distilled on copper pot stills, with no artificial additives, flavorings or third-party distillate. Oro is the amber expression, aged for about a year in American white oak barrels that arrive still wet with Laws Colorado Whiskey from Denver, and it takes all of its color from that wood, with no added sugar, molasses or caramel. Older bottles carried a trace of Colorado honey, a practice Montanya dropped in 2021. It's bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof). The published notes run to spicy red chili, apple pie, chocolate-covered coffee beans, crème brûlée and caramelized pineapple, with a warm, bready nose of coffee and caramel. Montanya is a certified B Corp, and the bottles and labels carry Cradle to Cradle and FSC certification. Use it in a Mai Tai, a rum Old Fashioned, or neat.
