Montanya Platino White Rum

Montanya is Karen Hoskin's mountain rum distillery, based just outside Crested Butte, Colorado, after starting out in Silverton in 2008, and it takes its cue from the high-altitude rum traditions of Guatemala, Colombia and Panama. Everything starts from raw, non-GMO, American-grown sugarcane, yeast, nutrients and water, fermented in-house and distilled on copper pot stills, with no artificial additives, flavorings or third-party distillate. Platino is a white rum that isn't young: it's aged a year or more in barrels that previously held Laws Colorado Whiskey and Montanya's own Oro, then filtered through coconut-husk carbon to strip out the color while keeping the character the wood built. Earlier bottlings were finished with a trace of Colorado honey, which the distillery discontinued in 2021. It's bottled at 40% ABV. Published notes describe apple, cream and biscotti on the nose, with cardamom, coffee, toasted almond, chai, tonka bean and white pepper on the palate. Montanya is a certified B Corp with Cradle to Cradle certified bottles. It has more depth than a typical white rum, so use it where the rum should show: a Daiquiri, a Mojito, or a rum and tonic.
