Owney's New York City Small Batch Rum
Owney's is the rum of The Noble Experiment, the distillery Bridget Firtle opened in Bushwick, Brooklyn, in the summer of 2012 after leaving a hedge fund job analyzing alcohol companies. It was the first rum distillery in New York City in close to a century, and both names point back to Prohibition: the "noble experiment" was the era's own nickname for the dry law, and Owney is Owen "Owney" Madden, the Harlem bootlegger and rum runner who owned the Cotton Club. The rum is built from three things: Grade A, non-GMO molasses from Florida and Louisiana, the distillery's proprietary yeast strain, and New York City water. Firtle's approach puts the flavor in the fermentation rather than in barrels or additives, letting esters develop before distillation on a custom pot-column hybrid still with a six-plate column, and it is blended and bottled at the distillery at 40% ABV. The producer notes lively vanilla and cane on the nose with banana and pineapple, a cane-forward palate moving into warm baking spice, a slight funk and nutty, mineral notes, and a clean, dry finish of medium length. A white rum with real character for daiquiris and highballs.
