Down Island Spirits Ghana 2020 Rum
Down Island Spirits is an independent rum bottler founded by Mike Streeter that releases single casks without sweetening, and this is one of its most unusual: a rum from MIM Distillery in Ghana, one of the very few West African rum producers whose spirit has reached American shelves. It was distilled in a pot still in 2020 and aged for four years before Down Island bottled it in 2024 from a single cask, #GH01-09, as part of its ARC-XB series. It's bottled at full cask strength, 62% ABV (124 proof), with nothing added. Tasters on RumX describe it as fresh and grassy, with leather, acidity and herbs on the nose, and a palate that runs from herbs and green plant notes to red fruit, chocolate and even a hint of marshmallow, with an herbal, grassy finish. It's young, lively and far from the usual Caribbean profiles, which is exactly the point of bottling it. A small single-cask outturn from an origin almost nobody else is bottling. Taste it neat first, then add water gradually to bring the fruit forward.
