La Maison & Velier Flag Series Cambodia 2016 Rum
The Flag Series is a joint project between La Maison du Whisky, the Paris spirits house, and Velier, the Genoa bottler run by Luca Gargano that built its reputation on single-origin, unadulterated rum. Each release highlights one country's distillate, and this one comes from Samai Distillery in Cambodia, in a collaboration between Velier and Samai. The rum is distilled from sugarcane molasses in a copper pot still and was laid down in 2016. It then went through a split maturation: five years in ex-bourbon casks in Cambodia's tropical climate, followed by three more years in ex-bourbon casks in Europe, for eight years in total. It was bottled at cask strength, 48.7% ABV. The Daily Pour scored it 88, describing bright citrus and fruity, juicy notes with rich oak and spice: apple, grapefruit, cardamom, cinnamon, coriander seed, and vanilla. The split pairs fast tropical aging with slower time in a cooler climate. A rare bottle from an unusual rum origin, best poured neat, with a few drops of water if you want to open it up.
