Bone Snapper X-Ray is the reserve rye from Backbone Bourbon Co. of Bardstown, Kentucky: the same 95% rye, 5% malted barley whiskey distilled in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, as the original Bone Snapper, but drawn only from barrels aged four years or more and bottled at 55% ABV (110 proof). Backbone found that between years three and four the youthful spice gives way to a fuller, richer, more complex whiskey, and X-Ray bottles that moment.
The Whiskey Wash described musty sandalwood and vanilla extract with resin and rose on the nose, burnt sugar, caramel, clove and cinnamon on the palate, and a long, tannic finish, calling the profile busy and incense-like. It is a step up in depth from the standard Bone Snapper and a natural for a Sazerac or a Boulevardier, or neat for rye drinkers who like their whiskey loud.
