Mount Gay Single Estate Series #1, released as edition 23_01, is the first rum in Mount Gay's estate project, made entirely from cane the distillery grew itself. After buying back 324 acres of the original Mount Gay Estate in St Lucy, at the northern tip of Barbados and the distillery's home since 1703, Mount Gay began growing its own sugarcane again. For this release, cane from the 2016 and 2017 harvests was turned into molasses at the distillery, fermented, distilled entirely in copper pot stills, and aged in ex-bourbon casks on site, so every step from field to bottle happened in St Lucy. Master blender Trudiann Branker called the series as Barbadian as rum could be. It is bottled non-chill filtered at 55% ABV (110 proof) in a 700ml bottle, and only 1,200 bottles were allocated to the US when it launched in November 2023. Mount Gay's notes describe light golden hues and a nose of pear, plum, fresh-cut flowers, dried fruit, nutmeg, and lemon, followed by a palate of pineapple, sea salt, leather, ripe yellow banana, and star anise that keeps building in the glass.
