Brovo Spirits Boomerang Liqueur
In bar slang a boomerang is a drink one bartender sends to another through a shared regular, a gesture of respect, and BroVo Spirits of Woodinville, Washington named this liqueur for it because the recipe came from behind the bar: it was authored by Micah Melton, beverage director of The Aviary in Chicago, part of Grant Achatz's Alinea group. Boomerang starts on BroVo's amaro base, a distillate of neutral grain spirit and rhubarb that is aged in used whiskey barrels. Dried cherry, apricot, walnut, orange and vanilla are infused into it, the blend is balanced, then cinnamon, peppercorn and cayenne go in to finish, and the whole thing is sweetened with agave nectar to about 20% sugar and rested on racks. BroVo's own summary is a complex cherry liqueur, rich and thick, that behaves like a chameleon and adapts to whatever base spirit it meets. Bottled at 30% ABV. It won Best in Category at the American Distilling Institute judging and a 92-point gold from the Beverage Tasting Institute, and Serious Eats named it one of the twelve best spirits of 2014.
