Caffo Anisette di Calabria Liqueur
Caffo Anisette di Calabria is a traditional, hyper-regional anise liqueur from Fratelli Caffo, the family distillery founded in 1915 in Limbadi, Calabria. Made since the 1950s from two local varieties of black anise seed and tops plus a secret blend of rare spices, it is distilled in a copper alembic pot still and bottled unfiltered and non-chill filtered at 30% ABV in a 750ml bottle. The natural anethole in real anise makes it louche to a cloudy white when water is added.
The nose is apricot, star anise, lemon and candied fennel. The palate is silky with refreshing mint, star anise, angelica root and a hint of cacao, finishing on bright candied fruit reminiscent of lemon and Indian mukhwas. It is delicate and balanced, a great introduction to anise for skeptics. Serve it chilled, with ice water for the louche, in espresso as a caffè corretto, or in a Sazerac rinse.
