Caffo Sambuca Secolare is the anise liqueur from Gruppo Caffo, the family distillery founded in 1915 in Limbadi, Calabria. Secolare ("century-old") is made in the classic style with star anise and licorice, but its signature is Calabrian elderflower, which adds a delicate floral lift to the traditional anise profile. Bottled at a robust 42% ABV in a 750ml bottle, a little stronger than most sambucas.
The taste is sweet star anise and licorice interwoven with fragrant elderflower, a silky texture and a long, tingling finish that lingers on the palate. Serve it the Italian way, neat with three coffee beans (con la mosca), as a chilled shot, in espresso for a caffè corretto, or with ice and water for the louche.
