Caffo Vecchio Amaro del Capo
Vecchio Amaro del Capo is the flagship of Fratelli Caffo in Limbadi, Calabria, and the best-selling amaro in Italy. It is made from a neutral grain spirit and 29 Southern Italian botanicals sourced from the region's landscapes, including sweet and bitter oranges, tangerine, chamomile, juniper, licorice, anise, mint and hyssop, each harvested at peak ripeness and macerated immediately to capture its truest expression. Bottled at 35% ABV in a 750ml bottle.
The nose is mandarin orange peel, mint, anise and cinnamon bark. The palate balances bitter orange with clove, licorice and spicy juniper, then tangerine, chamomile and allspice take their turn in an ever-shifting finish. Traditionally served ice-cold from the freezer as a respite from the Calabrian heat, it is also excellent at room temperature or in cocktails, where its botanicals reveal warm fruit and balanced acidity.
