English Harbour Reserve 10 Year Old Antigua Rum
English Harbour Reserve 10 Year Old is the long-aged flagship of Antigua Distillery Ltd, the island's rum distillery, founded in 1932 by a group of local rum shop owners. The name comes from English Harbour, the historic naval harbour on Antigua's south coast. The rum is made from molasses and distilled in a copper column still, then matured in charred 200-litre ex-bourbon barrels. The Reserve is a blend of rums aged a minimum of ten years, with some components as old as twenty-five, assembled in small batches of about 8,000 litres, brought down to 40% ABV (80 proof) with pure water and filtered before bottling. Antigua Distillery describes smoky oak balanced with citrus, dried fruit, vanilla and burnt sugar. Master of Malt's notes add a thick, full nose of molasses and Demerara with a little smoke, dried fruit and fudge; a rich, spiced palate of tropical fruit, buttery toffee apple and oily espresso with a floral edge; and a finish of oak, cigar box and honey. This is a rum to sip neat or with a single cube, the way you'd approach a good aged whisky, and an easy bridge for bourbon or Cognac drinkers into aged rum.
