English Harbour 5 Year Old Antigua Rum
English Harbour 5 Year Old is the core aged rum from Antigua Distillery Ltd, the island's rum producer, founded in 1932 when a group of local rum shop owners joined forces. The brand takes its name from English Harbour, the historic naval port on Antigua's south coast. The rum is made from molasses sourced from Guyana, fermented with baker's yeast in open vats and distilled in a copper column still, which gives a lighter, cleaner spirit than a pot still. The blend is built from rums aged a minimum of five years, with some components up to eight, in 200-litre ex-bourbon American oak barrels, and the finished blend is married in large 5,000-litre oak vats before bottling at 40% ABV (80 proof). Difford's Guide describes it as sweet and easy-drinking, with round vanilla fudge and golden syrup flavors lifted by a pinch of cinnamon spice, and a long finish of soft vanilla and lingering cinnamon. It's a good everyday sipper on ice and an excellent base for a Mai Tai, a Daiquiri, a rum Old Fashioned or simply rum and ginger beer.
