Maison Isautier is the oldest distillery on Réunion, the French island in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, founded in 1845 by Louis and Charles Isautier in Saint-Pierre and still run by the family today. This small-batch release is a traditional rum, the French term for rum distilled from molasses rather than fresh cane juice. It was barreled in May 2006 and aged for sixteen years in Réunion's hot, humid tropical climate, where evaporation and cask interaction run far faster than in Europe, before being bottled in September 2022 through LMDW Creations, the bottling arm of France's La Maison du Whisky. It's bottled at cask strength, 57% ABV, without dilution. VinePair, which rated it 94 points, describes dried stone fruits and oaky vanilla sweetness on the nose, followed by a mineral-rich palate with hints of licorice, roasted coffee and demerara sugar, calling it reserved but nuanced despite the high proof.
