Maison Isautier 16 Year Old Small Batch Sugar Cane Rum
Maison Isautier is the oldest distillery on Réunion, the French island in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, founded in 1845 by Louis and Charles Isautier in Saint-Pierre and still run by the family today. This small-batch release is distilled from Réunion sugarcane, grown in the island's fertile volcanic soil by a network of more than 3,000 local planters who supply the distillery. It was distilled in 2006 and aged for sixteen years in Réunion's humid tropical climate, where barrels work far faster than in Europe, before being bottled in September 2022 through LMDW Creations, the bottling arm of France's La Maison du Whisky. It's bottled at cask strength, 59% ABV, without dilution, and the release was limited to 3,790 bottles. VinePair rated it 94 points and describes dried fruits, warm spice and citrus zest, followed by caramelized sugar and herbal accents, calling it both bold and refined and a showcase for one of the world's most compelling and still underappreciated rum regions. Try it next to its sister bottling, the 16 Year Old Molasses rum from the same vintage, to taste how much the raw material shapes the spirit.
