New Grove Oak Aged Rum
New Grove is the rum of the Grays group on the island of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, a lineage that runs back to 1740 and Domaine de La Villebague in Pamplemousses, site of the island's first sugar mill and rum distillery in 1743. Descendants of Pierre Charles Harel established Grays in 1931, and the New Grove Distillery now sits within the Terra Group, which controls more than 6,000 hectares of sugarcane. The molasses comes from the group's own Terra Milling at Belle Vue Harel, and is fermented for no more than 35 hours before distillation, mainly in a continuous Coffey column still, with a pot still used on occasion. The Oak Aged is a blend of rums aged between one and 15 years, bottled at 40% ABV, and like the rest of the New Grove range it's made without added sugar or coloring. Master of Malt's tasting notes give a nose of orange, clove, polished oak and milk chocolate; a palate of cinnamon, ginger, cigar box and leafy herbs; and a finish of brown sugar, cooked fruit, beeswax and toasted almond.
