Brinley Gold Shipwreck Mango Rum
Brinley Gold Shipwreck is a family rum company on the island of St. Kitts in the Eastern Caribbean, started in 2002 by Bob Brinley and now run by his son Zach, whose stated ambition was to make the smoothest flavored rums anywhere. The line takes its name from a British troop ship that went down off the St. Kitts coast in 1782. The Mango is a molasses-based rum infused with natural Brazilian mango for a full two weeks in small batches on the island, a far longer maceration than most commercial flavored rums, which lean on added flavoring. That extended contact with real fruit is the point of the brand: mango depth rather than sugar. It is bottled at 36% ABV (72 proof). The producer's tasting note: ripe mango with stone fruit and citrus on the nose, a full-bodied mango palate opening into peach and mandarin orange over a molasses backbone, and a medium, slightly toasty finish that turns honeyed and caramelized. It has taken a gold at the International Rum Festival and a silver at the Ministry of Rum tasting. Pour it over ice with soda or pineapple, or build a mango daiquiri around it.
