Efe Gold Raki
Efe was the first private-sector raki distiller in Turkey after the state monopoly on raki ended in 2004, and it has since grown into the country's second-largest distiller, producing around 15 million liters a year and exporting to more than 30 markets, with a reputation for new takes on a very traditional spirit. Efe Gold is one of those: a raki made from Anatolian grapes and aniseed and then matured in oak barrels for about 120 days, a rare step for a category that is almost always bottled unaged. The time in wood gives Efe Gold its pale golden color and, in the producer's own description, vanilla notes that make it softer and rounder while keeping the spicy anise character raki is known for. Efe calls it soft and spicy. Serve it the classic way, in a tall glass topped with chilled water, where it turns milky white like any raki, alongside meze such as white cheese, melon, grilled fish and spreads, or pour a little neat and chilled to taste what the oak adds. It's a good bottle for anyone who knows raki and wants to see a different side of it.
