Gold Cock 10 Year Single Malt Whisky
Gold Cock's 10 Year is the flagship age-stated single malt from Rudolf Jelínek, the storied Moravian distillery better known worldwide for its plum brandy, whose roots reach back to the 16th century — and whose Gold Cock whisky brand has quietly existed since the 1970s, making it one of continental Europe's more established malt whisky projects. The recipe is genuinely local top to bottom: malt from the Bruntál malthouse, only symbolically peated to around 10 PPM (a whisper of smoke, nothing like the brand's heavily peated sibling), fermented with distillers' yeast, then double-distilled as slowly as possible. The new make matures a full decade in heavily charred barrels of European winter oak, coopered in the Czech Republic. It's bottled at a distinctive 49.2% ABV — a tribute to the 49.2° parallel that runs directly through the distillery's hometown of Vizovice. Expect a maltier, gentler profile than the Peated: honeyed cereal, orchard fruit, vanilla, and caramel from the charred oak, with warm baking spice and just a faint breath of smoke underneath, carried by real weight from the near-cask proof. Dramface, reviewing the brand's range, praised its honest craft bona fides — local Moravian barley, in-house floor maltings, local cooperage, no chill filtration, no added color. A genuinely well-made Czech answer to Speyside, and a great conversation bottle for any whisky shelf.
