Pango Tropical Flavored Rhum
Pango comes from Rhum Barbancourt, the Haitian rhum house founded in 1862. Unlike most flavored rums, which start from neutral spirit or a light molasses rum, Pango is built on Barbancourt's own aged rhum, distilled twice from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses and matured in French Limousin oak casks. The name is a blend of the two fruits that go into it, pineapple and mango, which are blended into the aged rhum along with a measure of spice. It is bottled at 35% ABV (70 proof), lighter than Barbancourt's straight rhums and built for mixing. Reviewers note that it avoids the heavy sweetness common to the category: the tropical fruit leads, but there is a backing of spice and earthiness behind it, and you can still pick out the grassy sugarcane juice and oak from the base rhum. Use it as the core of a mango or pineapple Daiquiri or a tropical rum punch, or keep it simple and pour it long over ice with pineapple juice, coconut water or ginger beer.
