Koloa Kauai Reserve 3 Year Rum
Kauai Reserve is the aged line from Kōloa Rum Company, the distillery in Kalaheo on the south shore of Kauai, and the 3 Year launched the line in 2018. The rum is made from Hawaiian sugarcane and island water filtered through volcanic rock, distilled at Kalaheo, where Kōloa runs a vintage 1,210-gallon copper pot still built in New England after World War II. For Kauai Reserve, that spirit is aged for a minimum of three years in select American white oak barrels. It's produced in small batches of twelve barrels, with each batch yielding roughly 3,500 bottles, and every bottle is individually numbered. Like Kōloa's other rums, it contains no added sugar, color or other ingredients, so what's in the glass is cane, pot still and oak. Kōloa describes it as remarkably smooth, with rich, complex flavors that linger long after the sip. Three years in American oak in Hawaii's warm climate does more work than the number suggests. Pour it neat or with a single large cube to taste the barrel, or use it as the aged-rum base in a Mai Tai or a rum Old Fashioned.
