Down Island Spirits is an independent rum bottler founded by Mike Streeter that releases single casks without sweetening, and this is its Hampden, a private selection from Hampden Estate in Trelawny, Jamaica, the historic sugar estate whose pot still rums built modern Jamaica's reputation for funk. Hampden makes its rums the old way, with long, natural fermentations and double retort pot stills, and sorts its output into marques by ester level. This cask carries the <>H marque, one of Hampden's higher-ester styles. It was distilled in 2014, aged for 10 years, and bottled in 2024 from cask #434818-10 at a full cask strength of 68.5% ABV (137 proof), unsweetened and unreduced. Tasters on RumX describe exactly what Hampden fans come for: prominent esters led by pineapple and bananas Foster on the nose, with solvent and glue notes in the background, then an intense palate of grilled, overripe pineapple, some wood, and a touch of bitterness on the finish.
