Myrtle Bank takes its name from the Myrtle Bank Hotel in Kingston, built in the 1800s and at its height in the 1920s and '30s, when it was the center of the Jamaican capital's social scene and among the grandest hotels in the Caribbean. This 10 Year Single Cask is an independent bottling of rum from Jamaica's oldest distillery, made from highland-grown molasses and distilled in traditional copper pot stills. What sets it apart is where it aged: the rum spent its ten years in ex-bourbon barrels in the cool, temperate climate of the United Kingdom rather than the Caribbean heat, which slows evaporation, keeps the angel's share low, and gives a more delicate maturation closer to single malt Scotch than to a tropically aged rum. It's bottled from a single cask without dilution at 60% ABV (120 proof), with no added coloring or sugar. The published notes point to tropical fruits, ripe banana, oak, vanilla and cocoa. At full strength it rewards time in the glass, and a few drops of water will soften the heat for anyone who wants it.
