Old 49 Distilling Catalina Apéro Rafraîchissant is a California aperitivo made in Los Angeles as a local alternative to Aperol. Founder David Glicksman, a bartender and screenwriter, created it after time spent in France, building it for the spritz. The base is a corn spirit macerated for roughly three months with fresh local citrus and a proprietary list of more than a dozen roots and botanicals, including rhubarb, cinchona and gentian root. Botanicals are added and adjusted by hand in stages, the solids are removed with a plate filter, and the liqueur is lightly sweetened with cane sugar.

The producer describes a nose of lime zest, fresh orange juice, lychee and orange blossom, a palate of lemongrass, mastic and marshmallow with lemon zest, and a gentle, lingering citrus-framed bitterness on the finish. It is bottled at 15% ABV in a one-liter bottle with a hand screen-printed label and a paper seal modeled on vintage US federal tax stamps.

Pour it in a classic spritz with prosecco and soda, in a Spaghett with lager and lemon, or in a Bitter Mai Tai.
