Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey
Four Roses has one of the strangest histories in bourbon: it was America's best-selling bourbon before the 1950s, then Seagram's bought it and pulled the real whiskey off American shelves entirely, selling only a cheap blended version domestically for nearly 40 years while the good stuff went overseas. Master Distiller Jim Rutledge spent 1995 to 2015 rebuilding its reputation, and Single Barrel — introduced in 2004 — became the flagship of that comeback. What makes Four Roses genuinely unique is its recipe system: two mash bills and five proprietary yeast strains yield ten distinct bourbons. This standard Single Barrel has always been the OBSV recipe — high-rye (60% corn, 35% rye, 5% malted barley) with the "V" yeast, known for delicate fruit and rye character — drawn from one barrel aged 7 to 9 years, non-chill filtered, at 100 proof (50% ABV). Because it's a true single barrel, bottles vary, but the profile stays consistent: reviewers describe ripe cherry, peach, cinnamon, and a distinctly floral note on the nose, moving into caramel, dark chocolate, rye spice, and black pepper, with a long, sweet-oak finish. The Whiskey Wash called it "one of my favourite bottles of whiskey in the world" and "remarkably consistent" for a single barrel. A benchmark high-rye bourbon and a genuine value around $50. Four Roses was acquired by Gallo from Kirin in April 2026.
