Michter's US*1 Unblended American Whiskey is the whiskey in the Michter's range that does not play by bourbon rules, and that is the point. Bourbon and rye must by law be aged in new oak barrels, but Michter's American Whiskey is aged in whiskey-soaked barrels that previously held bourbon, which gives it a rich, mellow, distinctive profile with the sweetness of the used wood and less of the tannic grip of new oak. It is bottled at 83.4 proof in Louisville, Kentucky.
The unblended distinction matters: American blended whiskey may legally contain grain neutral spirits, but Michter's never does, so this is all whiskey. Then-Master Distiller Willie Pratt re-released it in late 2013 after a nearly three-year absence, declaring it just right and the best it has ever been. Expect butterscotch, caramel, vanilla, honey and a soft, rounded oak character with a gentle finish. It is a superb sipping whiskey for people who find bourbon too woody, and a lovely base for a mellow Old Fashioned. Michter's traces its roots to America's first whiskey company, founded in 1753.
