Michter's US*1 Original Sour Mash Whiskey is a revival of the whiskey that was Michter's single most popular product in the 1970s and 80s, a bottle that disappeared from the market in 1989 and made a triumphant return in 2012 as part of the US*1 line. Sour mash refers to the production method, in which a portion of previously fermented mash starts the next batch, much like sourdough bread, but the name stuck to this whiskey because of its taste.
Michter's Sour Mash uses a unique grain recipe that cannot be classified as either bourbon or rye, sitting between the two with the sweetness of corn and the spice of rye in balance, and it is bottled at 86 proof in Louisville, Kentucky. Expect caramel, honey and vanilla up front with cinnamon, dried fruit and a peppery rye edge, and a smooth, medium finish. It won Whisky Advocate's American Whiskey of the Year in 2019 and has become a favorite of Michter's fans and bartenders alike.
