Smooth Ambler Contradiction Whiskey is exactly what its name says: a blend of whiskey Smooth Ambler makes with whiskey it does not. Smooth Ambler Spirits in Maxwelton, West Virginia built its reputation in the early 2010s by openly bottling sourced Indiana bourbon under the Old Scout label while its own distillate matured, and Contradiction was the bridge, marrying Smooth Ambler's own young wheated bourbon with older sourced high-rye bourbon into one whiskey, non-chill filtered and bottled at 100 proof.
Because it combines a wheated bourbon with a rye bourbon, the end result tastes like a four-grain bourbon, full-bodied, with notes of dried fruit and butter rum, caramel and soft spice. It was one of the first blends to be transparent about mixing craft and sourced whiskey, and it remains a favorite value pour from West Virginia. At 100 proof it makes a great Old Fashioned and sips comfortably neat. Distilled and bottled in West Virginia, Contradiction is a small piece of craft whiskey history and a very drinkable one.
