Sông Cái Spiced Roselle Gin is the boldest expression from Sông Cái Distillery in Hanoi, Vietnam's first gin distillery, founded in 2018 by biochemist Daniel Nguyen to support sustainable farming in the country's northwest mountains. It harnesses the bright tartness of roselle (hibiscus) with warm Vietnamese spices, ginger, star anise and cinnamon bark, over juniper and local botanicals, and is bottled at 32.5% ABV (65 proof) in a 700ml bottle with a deep ruby color.
The nose is vivid hibiscus, red fruit, sweet spice and citrus peel; the palate is a lively interplay of roselle acidity, ginger, star anise, cinnamon and juniper with subtle herbal notes, and the finish is long and expressive with floral tartness and warm spice. It is a natural for a spiced spritz with soda, a roselle G&T, or a hot toddy in winter, and the lower proof makes it an easy afternoon pour.
