Dove Tale Puerto Rico Dark Rum

Dove Tale is the rum from John Drew Brands, the spirits company founded in 2015 by Jonathan Drew, who also founded the Drew Estate cigar company. It was one of the three spirits the company debuted at WSWA in 2016, alongside Brixton Mash Destroyer and John Drew Rye, and Drew has called it his "friends and family" rum: unlike the deliberately challenging Brixton, it's meant to be an easygoing, crowd-pleasing dark rum. The base is blackstrap refiner's grade molasses made from sugarcane grown in the Florida Everglades, the dense, mineral-rich final molasses left over after sugar refining that gives full-bodied rums their depth. After distillation the rum is matured in used bourbon barrels, for four years according to the brand's launch materials, which is where its bourbon-leaning character comes from. John Drew Brands describes it as sweet and vibrant yet dark and mysterious, with layers of caramel, and Cigar Aficionado picked out vanilla, nougat and caramel.
