Joel Richard Esencia 25 Year is a Colombian rum from Joel Richard, the private label of Joel Beth and Richard Trachtenberg, the principals of Pacific Edge Wine and Spirits in Agoura Hills, California, an importer best known for bringing A.D. Rattray and Wm Cadenhead Scotch into the U.S. The rum was distilled by Destilería Colombiana in Cartagena and blended by Hernán Parra, the blender behind Dictador, which is why the squat bottle with its raised glass "D" will look familiar to Dictador fans. It is made from sugar cane honey (miel) rather than molasses, from a blend of roughly 70% column-still and 30% pot-still rum, and matured in a mix of ex-bourbon, sherry, and port casks. The 25-year figure is the label's age claim; some reviewers believe the blend is solera-aged rather than a single-age release, which is common in Latin American rum. Bottled at 40% ABV.
