Transcontinental Australia 2013 Rum

Transcontinental Rum Line is the independent rum bottling series from La Maison du Whisky, the Paris spirits house, built around a single idea: buy casks of rum at the distillery, age them for a stretch in their home climate, then ship them to France to finish maturing in the cooler, slower conditions of a European warehouse, so each bottle carries both tropical and continental ageing. This 2013 vintage is the first Australian rum in the series. It comes from Beenleigh, the Queensland distillery that has been making cane spirit for more than 135 years, distilled from Queensland molasses on a pot still. It spent roughly four years ageing in Australia, then a little over two more in France in ex-Cognac casks, for a total of six years, and was bottled at 48% ABV with no additives and no added sugar, in a 750ml bottle for the US line. La Maison du Whisky describes it as dried stone fruit, caramelized apple, crème brûlée and whole spices, dry on the palate; Astor Wines' staff found it more unruly than that, with candied and preserved lime, vanilla, allspice and an earthy, oversteeped-peppermint-tea note, and called it a distinctive rum that drinks well neat.
