Transcontinental Rum Line is the independent label launched in 2016 by La Maison du Whisky in Paris, built around one idea: split a rum's maturation between the tropics where it was distilled and the cooler cellars of Europe, then bottle it with a full age statement and no additives. This Australia 2014 is a pot still molasses rum from Beenleigh Distillery in Queensland, a producer with a long history in the Australian sugar belt. It spent its first five years in American oak in Australia's subtropical heat, then crossed to Europe for two more years in ex-Cognac casks before bottling at 48% ABV in a 700ml bottle. The Cognac wood is the twist here: most Beenleigh releases are straight bourbon-barrel rums, and the French oak layers a drier, grape-brandy edge onto Beenleigh's naturally fruity, slightly savory pot still character. SpiritRadar tasters pick up pear, butterscotch and herbal notes on the nose, a spicy, nutty, caramel-driven palate, and a dry, woody finish with raisin, dried fruit and gingerbread.
