Transcontinental Rum Line La Maison & Velier 5th Anniversary Fiji 2012
Transcontinental Rum Line is La Maison du Whisky's independent rum label, launched in 2016 for single-origin rums with a full age statement, no additives, and maturation split between the tropics and Europe. This single cask was selected to mark the fifth anniversary of La Maison & Velier, the joint venture between La Maison du Whisky in Paris and Luca Gargano's Velier in Genoa, two of the names most responsible for the modern cask-strength rum movement. The rum comes from South Pacific Distillery in Fiji, a cult favorite among rum collectors for its heavy, ester-rich pot still spirit. Distilled from molasses in 2012, it rested two years in Fiji's tropical heat before shipping to Europe for a further eight years of continental aging, then was bottled in 2022 at ten years old straight from cask number F12FPBP02 at a full 65.3% ABV, with only 240 bottles drawn. Fijian pot still rum at this age and strength is a serious pour: RumX reviewers describe an intensely gourmand nose of esters and tropical fruit, passion fruit and banana, with the slightly funky, glue-and-calvados edge that makes South Pacific so distinctive. A collector's bottle.
