Transcontinental Rum Line Panama 2011
Transcontinental Rum Line is the independent rum label launched in 2016 by La Maison du Whisky in Paris. Every release follows the same idea: a single-origin rum, a full age statement, no coloring and no sugar, and a maturation split between the tropics where it was distilled and the cooler cellars of Europe, so the label tells you how long the rum spent in each climate. This Panama 2011 is a column still molasses rum that spent six years aging in ex-bourbon barrels near the Panama Canal, then crossed to continental Europe for a final twelve months before bottling at seven years old and 43% ABV in a 750ml bottle. Panamanian rum is built in the light, elegant Spanish style, and the extra year of cool aging keeps it from going flabby, holding onto the fruit while the oak rounds things off. Retailer notes describe sweet vanilla and tropical fruit with spice and cedar on the nose, a full, round palate of citrus and candied apricot leading into spicy oak and nutmeg, and a long finish of vanilla, fruit and sweet oak. An easygoing, additive-free sipper that also works in a daiquiri or old fashioned.
