Fortuitous Union Small Batch Rum & Rye Blend is exactly what it says: a blend of aged Caribbean rum and American rye whiskey, made by Rolling Fork Spirits, the Kentucky-based independent bottler known for its rum program. Batch No. 1 combines twelve-year-old Trinidad rum, which makes up more than three-quarters of the blend, with straight rye from MGP in Indiana, married in bourbon casks and bottled at 103 proof in a run of 1,650 bottles.
Breaking Bourbon's tasting panel found a sugary nose of molasses, butterscotch and cinnamon, with the rum's vanilla and burnt caramel balanced by the hearty spice of the rye and a rich, oak-forward finish, and noted that all three reviewers wanted more. Rolling Fork's own notes add clove, coffee, maple syrup, citrus and toasted almond. It is a bottle that bourbon and rye drinkers who have never warmed to rum tend to fall for, and it makes an outstanding Old Fashioned or a boozy Rum Manhattan.
