Gekkeikan Nigori Sake
Gekkeikan Nigori is the Kyoto brewery's cloudy, coarsely filtered sake, from the house founded in 1637 by Jiemon Okura in Fushimi, the sake district whose soft spring water has fed brewers for centuries and whose name, meaning "laurel crown," became the best-selling sake brand in the United States. Nigori is pressed through a coarse mesh so fine rice particles stay suspended in the bottle, which is why it pours milky white and needs a gentle turn before serving; this one is brewed in Fushimi as a junmai, with no added distilled alcohol, from rice polished to 78 percent, and bottled at a gentle 10.5% ABV in a 720ml frosted green bottle. The brewery describes an earthy, sweet, lightly acidic nose with cream, yogurt and banana, a thick, creamy palate of overripe banana, milk and cantaloupe with bold acidity, and a slightly grainy but crisp and refreshing finish. Serve it well chilled, and pair it with spicy food, where its sweetness cools the heat, or with dessert.
