Hampden Estate makes the funkiest rum in Jamaica, and finding specific bottlings online is harder than it should be. Great House editions sell out within weeks, limited Velier releases vanish, and the mark names on the labels (HLCF, LROK, DOK) mean nothing unless someone explains them. This guide covers what Hampden is, what every mark means, and which Hampden bottles Chips Liquor has in stock right now, with fast shipping to most states.

What Makes Hampden Different
Hampden Estate sits in Trelawny parish in northwest Jamaica. It was founded in 1753 as a sugar plantation, and the Great House on the property dates to 1779. In 2009 the Jamaican government sold the distillery at public auction to the Hussey family, who began aging rum on site for the first time.
Everything about Hampden's process is built to produce esters, the aromatic compounds that give Jamaican rum its "funk" (overripe banana, pineapple, glue, olive brine). There is no commercial yeast. Fermentation is wild and runs anywhere from days to several weeks. The distillery keeps dunder and muck pits, where leftover stillage and cane waste are allowed to go sour and then get added back into the wash. Distillation runs entirely on double-retort pot stills, which makes Hampden one of only two Jamaican distilleries with no column still at all.
The rum is aged in Jamaica, where tropical heat speeds up barrel interaction, and bottled with no added sugar, no coloring, and no chill filtration.
For most of its history, Hampden sold rum in bulk to European blenders. The first official bottling under its own name was Rum Fire, an unaged white overproof, in 2011. The first aged distillery bottlings didn't arrive until 2018, through La Maison & Velier, which is why a 270-year-old distillery feels like a new brand.
What the Hampden Marks Mean
Jamaican distilleries classify rum by "marks," codes that correspond to a target ester range measured in grams per hectoliter of pure alcohol (g/hlpa). Hampden runs eight marks. From lightest to heaviest, using the distillery's own published ranges:
- OWH (Outram Wormald Hussey): 40–80 g/hlpa. The lightest Hampden mark.
- LFCH (Lawrence Francis Close Hussey): 80–120.
- LROK (Light Rum Owen Kelly): 200–400.
- HLCF (Hampden Light Continental Flavoured): 400–600. The mark behind most of Hampden's core range.
- <>H ("Diamond H"): 900–1,000.
- HGML (Hampden George MacFarquhar Lawson): 1,000–1,100.
- C<>H ("C Diamond H"): 1,300–1,400.
- DOK (Dermot Owen Kelly-Lawson): 1,500–1,600. The heaviest mark Hampden makes, and right at the 1,600 g/hlpa ceiling set by a 1935 Jamaican law.
For scale, OWH at the bottom of the list is already a flavorful pot-still rum by most standards. DOK at the top is used in small proportions to season blends rather than bottled on its own.
Hampden Rum in Stock at Chips Liquor
Hampden Estate 8 Year
The flagship. Aged a minimum of eight years in Jamaica and bottled at 46% ABV with no coloring or sugar. The Whisky Exchange named it Rum of the Year for 2024. This is the bottle to start with if you've never had Hampden: the full funk profile at a proof you can sip without water. We also stock the earlier Hampden Estate 46% bottling, which launched in 2018 as a blend of OWH, LROK, and a small amount of DOK.
Hampden Estate HLCF Classic Overproof
A single-mark bottling of HLCF, aged four years in Jamaica and bottled at 60% ABV. This is the purest expression of the mark that defines Hampden's house style, and at 400–600 g/hlpa it's a serious step up in intensity from the 8 Year. The Daily Pour scored it 97/100 in March 2026. Built for high-proof sipping and for Daiquiris and Mai Tais where you want the rum to dominate.
Hampden Estate 1753
The newest permanent addition to the core range, launched in early 2025. It's HLCF mark rum aged three years in ex-bourbon casks in Jamaica, bottled at 46% ABV, with a stated ester count of 476.9 g/hlpa. Think of it as the HLCF Classic at sipping strength. The Whisky Exchange named it Spirit of the Year for 2026, across all categories, not just rum.
Hampden Estate PAGOS
Hampden's sherry cask release. The rum is aged entirely in 500-liter Lustau sherry butts (Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso) in Jamaica and bottled at 52% ABV. Sherry wood on top of Hampden's ester profile makes it the most distinctive bottle in the core range. Originally a 1,200-bottle release in 2022; later batches have followed.
Hampden Great House Distillery Edition 2024
Great House is Hampden's annual limited release, produced every year since 2019 and named for the 1779 Great House on the estate. The 2024 edition blends multiple marks from three different vintages, all aged in ex-bourbon casks in Jamaica, and is bottled at 57% ABV. There's no age statement, and the exact mark breakdown isn't published. Each edition is a one-time bottling, and most years sell through quickly.
Hampden Great House Distillery Edition 2025
The current Great House release. Same format as 2024: a multi-mark, multi-vintage blend from ex-bourbon casks at 57% ABV. If you collect the series, this is the one still on shelves.
Hampden 8 Marks Aged 1 Year Tasting Collection
The best way to understand the marks is to taste them side by side. This set contains all eight Hampden marks, each aged one year in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 52% ABV in 200 ml bottles, with a "geek sheet" of the chemical analysis for each. Go from OWH to DOK in order and you'll understand the ester scale better than any article can explain it.
Rum Fire Jamaican Overproof
Hampden's unaged white rum, and the first bottling the distillery ever released under its own name, in 2011. Pot-still, 63% ABV, and completely raw. This is what Hampden tastes like before the barrel. Use it the way Jamaican bars do: in cocktails, where a small amount brings the full ester profile.
