Hampden 8 is the flagship of the funkiest distillery on earth — the bottle that, when it launched in 2018 alongside the Overproof, made rum enthusiasts declare there was no need for expensive Velier bottlings anymore. Hampden Estate in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica, has made rum since 1753 and had never bottled under its own name until Luca Gargano of Velier bought its entire aged stock; the process is unchanged from the 18th century — wild fermentation lasting up to two weeks in vats that are a two-century-old bacterial micro-habitat, dunder and muck-pit additions, double-retort copper pot stills, and tropical aging in the Jamaican heat. The 8 Year is 100% pot still, built since the reformulation on the OWH marque, aged a minimum of eight years in ex-bourbon oak on the estate, and bottled at 46% ABV with no sugar, color, or additives. The Rum Barrel scored it 87: outstanding, unmistakably Jamaican, plenty of funk, and it won't terrify a whisky drinker.
