Tierra Madre is the Mexican-style lager from Mother Earth Brew Co., the brewery founded in Vista in North County in 2010 by Daniel Love, Jon Love, and Kamron Khannakhjavani, which now also brews in Nampa, Idaho. The brewery's goal with it was a fresh, light lager that still has more to it than the mass-produced imports and domestic lagers it is up against. The recipe gets there with the grain bill: Vienna malt, the toasty, slightly richer malt behind the Vienna lager tradition that Mexican brewers adopted in the nineteenth century, together with corn, which keeps the body light and crisp. Mother Earth says the pairing gives the malt profile just enough oomph to separate this beer from its counterparts.
