Old Charter is one of the oldest names in American whiskey, dating to 1874 and named for the Charter Oak, the Connecticut tree that stood for centuries before falling in a storm in 1856. Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky revived the name in 2018 for Old Charter Oak, a series built to show what different oak species do to bourbon; earlier editions used Mongolian, Canadian and Chinkapin oak. The law requires bourbon to age in new charred oak containers but never specifies American white oak, and Buffalo Trace has been experimenting with French oak since 1995. This French Oak expression uses Buffalo Trace's Mash #1, the same recipe behind Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare, aged in new barrels coopered from French oak and bottled at 92 proof. Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley calls it power packed with sweetness from vanilla, caramel and wood sugars, balanced by French oak's tannins. Every Old Charter Oak release is produced in limited supply, and the French Oak bottlings are among the most sought after in the series.
