Old Charter Oak is Buffalo Trace Distillery's experimental bourbon series built around a single question: how much does the tree change the whiskey? Each release takes the distillery's Kentucky straight bourbon and ages it in barrels made from a different oak source or treatment, then bottles it in the tall, flat Old Charter decanter with a wood medallion on the front.

The series launched in 2018 with French Oak and Mongolian Oak, followed by Canadian Oak, Chinkapin Oak, a 12 Year French Oak and other limited runs, each one allocated and hard to find. The newest chapter, Finest Oak, flips the premise: rather than an exotic species, it uses hand-selected American white oak chosen for tight grain and ideal seasoning, bottled at 95 proof.
