Pusser's British Navy Rum

For more than 300 years the British Royal Navy issued every sailor a daily tot of rum, handed out by the ship's purser — "pusser" in naval slang — a tradition that began in 1655 and ended on July 31, 1970, a day still known as Black Tot Day. In 1979 the Admiralty approved Charles Tobias to re-blend the rum to its original specifications in the British Virgin Islands, and a portion of every bottle sold still goes to the Royal Navy Sailors' Fund, the charity established to compensate sailors for their lost tot. This is that rum: a blend of column and pot still rums distilled from fermented molasses and aged in ex-bourbon barrels, built on the original Admiralty recipe, with no artificial flavoring or coloring added. Bottled at 40% ABV. Expect a dark amber pour with molasses, treacle, toffee, and vanilla on the nose alongside oak, cinnamon, and nutmeg, opening into a full-bodied palate of burnt sugar, dried fruit, and warm baking spice with the distinctive Demerara wooden-still character underneath, finishing long and mellow. It's the foundation of the Painkiller — the cocktail Pusser's owns the trademark to — and a genuine piece of naval history in a glass.
