Pusser's is the only rum that can genuinely claim to be the Royal Navy's own. For more than 300 years, beginning in 1655, every British sailor received a daily tot handed out by the ship's purser — "pusser" in naval slang — a tradition that finally ended on July 31, 1970, a day still remembered as Black Tot Day. In 1979 the Admiralty approved Charles Tobias to re-blend the rum to its original specifications in the British Virgin Islands, and a portion of every bottle sold still goes to the Royal Navy Sailors' Fund, established to compensate sailors for the lost ration. The rums are blends of column and pot still Caribbean distillate aged in ex-bourbon barrels, with the Demerara wooden stills of Guyana — including Port Mourant, in production since 1732 — giving the range its distinctive character. The lineup runs from the 40% Blue Label built on the original Admiralty recipe, through the Gunpowder Proof at the true navy strength of 54.5% (named for the old test of dousing gunpowder in rum to prove it hadn't been watered), to the 15 Year, a separate blend aged in charred oak and rated 93 points by The Rum Howler, plus spiced expressions. Pusser's also owns the trademark to the Painkiller, and every bottle earns its place in that glass.
