Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey is the rye from Brown-Forman's Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky, one of the oldest and most picturesque distilleries in the state. Made in the traditional Kentucky rye style with a mash bill of 53% rye, 33% corn and 14% malted barley, it is triple pot-distilled alongside column-still whiskey and bottled at 90.4 proof.
With just over half rye in the mash and a healthy dose of corn, this is a rye for bourbon drinkers. Woodford describes bold flavors of pepper and tobacco with a long fruit and sweetly spiced finish, and Breaking Bourbon found a light nose of rye, new wood, pear and honeycrisp apple, peppery rye spice with honey, fresh apple and vanilla on the palate, and a highlight finish of pepper and leather turning to pear, honey and vanilla that lingers for minutes. It carries the same elegant, fruit-and-spice character as Woodford's bourbon, and it makes a refined Manhattan or Old Fashioned.
