Woodford Reserve is made at the Labrot & Graham distillery in Versailles, Kentucky — a National Historic Landmark on a site where distilling dates back to 1812, making it one of the oldest and smallest working distilleries in the state. Elijah Pepper first made whiskey on Glenn's Creek here, and his son's distiller, Dr. James Crow, refined the sour mash process on this very ground. Brown-Forman bought and restored the property in the 1990s, launching Woodford Reserve in 1996 under longtime Master Distiller Chris Morris, with Elizabeth McCall taking the role in 2023 — the youngest woman ever to hold it at a major Kentucky distillery. What sets Woodford apart mechanically is genuine: it's triple distilled in copper pot stills imported from Scotland, a technique almost unheard of in bourbon, then aged in heat-cycled stone warehouses. The brand organizes everything around what it calls the Five Sources of Flavor — grain, water, fermentation, distillation, and maturation. The lineup runs from the flagship Distiller's Select through Double Oaked, finished a second time in deeply toasted, lightly charred barrels, plus Rye, Wheat, Malt, the annual Master's Collection limited releases, and the official Kentucky Derby bottle released every spring since 1999.
